Achill Lifeboat

Achill Island lifeboat station is located in an area of magnificent coastal scenery, with the highest cliffs in Ireland. Celebrating 10 years as a lifeboat station, Achill Island lifeboat crews have received eight awards for gallantry since the station was founded.The station has in service a Trent class lifeboat is designed to lie afloat, either at deep-water moorings or at a berth. Introduced in 1994, it shares the same hull shape as the Severn class but is a smaller version. The sheerline sweeps down for ease of survivor recovery. As with the Severn, its propellers are protected so it can take ground without damage.

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboats have saved more than 137,000 lives. In 2005 RNLI lifeboats rescued 8,104 people - an average of 22 people per day. RNLI Lifeguards assisted 9,930 people.
