€15,000 For Achill’s Wild Rhubarb
The Heritage Council has announced funding worth €46,600 forfunding for heritage projects that will be carried out in Mayo this year. €15,000 of this will goto Deirdre Cunningham to fund a project dedicated to curbing the growth of Gunnera Tinctoria (”Wild Rhubarb”) on the island.
Gunnera tinctoria commonly known as “Wild Rhubarb” has established itself throughout Ireland, particularly on the west coast, and native plants are being displaced as Gunnera quickly becomes established. The spread of Gunnera tinctoria in North Mayo, Clare Island and on Achill Island threatens the integrity of many plant communities, reduces local biodiversity, increases the possibility of coastal erosion and has a negative aesthetic impact.
It is proposed to establish plot experiments on a range of site types on Achill Island, to assess the efficacy of different timing and applications of glyphosate herbicide as a means of controlling Gunnera and to monitor its growth.
