Achill Walks

Mayo is set to become the walking capital of Ireland. The March meeting of Mayo County Council was presented with a draft of the Mayo County Walking Strategy and Strategic Action Plan which, according to John Coll of the Mayo County Enterprise Board, is set to co-ordinate and drive the sustainable development and promotion of walking in the county.

There has been local opposition to walks by landowners to the proposed routes in the Achill area by landowners due to the continued use of vesting orders to procure commonage for commercial purposes.

According to Achill Tourism’s website.

“As much of the higher land on Achill is held in commonage, Achill offers free, open access for hillwalking.”

It still remains unclear whether any actual agreement with landowners and Achill Tourism over the use of their land has been reached.
