Achill Sound Hotel Hosts Exhibition

A new exhibition of paintings based on the beautiful island of Achill Beag has opened in the Achill Sound Hotel. The objective of the Oileain Project is to explore in detail from an artistic point of view abandoned islands around the Irish coast. The project was founded in 2002 by Aran-based painter Cyril O’Flaherty and Galway’s Lol Hardiman.

Achill Beag is the sixth island the artists have visited and the exhibition features work from a year of visits. It was evacuated in 1965 and the inhabitants were settled on the main (Achill) island and nearby mainland. The main settlement was in the centre of the island, bounded by two hills to the north and south. There are a small number of holiday homes on the island, but they are usually empty for most of the year. Access to the island is from Cé Mhór, in the village of Cloghmore, by local arrangement. A lighthouse on Achillbeg’s southern tip was completed in 1965.
