The Decline of B&B’s
B&B accommodation has been particularly affected by this increase in tourist accommodation supply. Combined with other factors such as changing tourist patterns and operational issues, the operating environment for many B&B operators has become much more challenging. Over the last five years alone, it is estimated that approximately 1,707 approved B&Bs, possibly more, have ceased to trade as approved B&Bs.
Given the age profile of the majority of B&B operators, the number of years in business and the fact that B&B businesses are less likely to be transferred to other family members, it is estimated that future years will continue to see the number of approved and unapproved B&Bs decline. Failte Ireland would estimimages.jpgate, based on Failte Ireland’s research, that the period 1996 to 2010 could see a decline of up to 32% (almost a third of all approved B&Bs).
