New Vessel for Achill & One of Ireland’s Youngest Skippers

0807_news_09_01.jpgYoung Achill fisherman Brendan O’Malley has shown his faith in the fishing industry, by purchasing his second fishing vessel within a year of buying his first. It has been a busy time for Brendan as he also got married on July 14th to local Achill girl Elaine Mulvanny and showing dedication to his craft was back out fishing soon after.

The overall dimensions of the MFV ‘Kristel Patrick’ are 20.4m x 6.7m x 3.75m. The vessel has a large chill room and has a capacity to store around 500 boxes of fish and has an ice machine with an output of 1.5 tonnes per day ton. The wheelhouse of the new boat is set to port with a skipper’s cabin and below deck the vessel can accommodate 6 of a crew.

Brendan purchased the vessel in April 2007 and on completing the purchase he sailed to Castletownbere. The vessel remained in Castletownbere for a number of weeks to have improvements made and have the vessel upgraded to Brendan’s own requirements. The vessel went on the slip at O’Donovan’s Boatyard in Oldcourt where the bottom of the vessel was painted and had an emergency pump fitted outside the engine room.
