Denis Gallagher Exhibition
Denis Gallagher (23/11/1922 - 4/11/2001) was born in Currane, by Clew Bay, facing Achill Island, County Mayo in 1922. Denis was educated locally and at St. Enda’s College in Galway. He qualified as a national school teacher having graduated from St. Patrick’s Drumcondra. He was a real enthusiast for gaelic games and played football for the local Achill club. He taught in Drimnagh in Dublin for several years before returning to Mayo in 1946 to take up a teaching post.
An exhibition commemorating the life and work of the former Achill TD was officially opened on Sunday afternoon last by Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó CuÃv TD at Casadh na Taoile in Currane.
A large crowd attended the opening of the exhibition, including members of the Gallagher family, former Mayo Fianna Fáil TD, Seán Calleary along with current TD, Dara Calleary, Seán Ó Neachtain MEP and many local representatives.
The exhibition was organised by Muintir a’Chorráin, the local development committee, and depicted the different aspects of the life of Denis Gallagher, who died in 2001, from his time as a school teacher to his role as a Government minister and his involvement with the GAA and community development.
Éamon Ó CuÃv told the congregation that he had known Denis Gallagher well and had often asked him for advice and help when he was starting out in politics, and Denis was always generous with both. For that reason, he said he was particularly delighted to receive the invitation to launch an exhibition in his honour.
