Tony Geraghty our moral Compass

It is with sadness that i report that Mayo Echo editor Tony Geraghty has forced the closoure of ever popular website castlebar.ie because of comments posted on the forums part of the website. A statement on the website states:

It is the policy of castlebar.ie to remove any posts that are complained about regardless of the merit of the complaint. Two days ago an email (time stamped: 29/05/2008 15:26) was received at info@castlebar.ie from Mr Tony Geraghty, editor of the Mayo Echo, alleging that ‘Defamatory Comments’ had been posted on Castlebar.ie regarding an article published in the Mayo Echo and requesting that they be removed. Within a few minutes of opening the email (at approximately 23:00 Irish time 29/05/2008) all recent posts referring to the Mayo Echo were deleted whether they included favourable comment or adverse comment concerning the article in question - as per the policy of the site when complaints are received. Quite ironic from a man that see’s himself as the moral guardian of Castlebar who takes it on himself to publish people’s photographs of people he considers to be gay men or paedophiles. Perhaps it will make people think twice before they pick up the sensationalist rag. To my mind at least it’s sensationalist journalism at it’s best and at most an irresponsible publicity stunt.

It’s a pity that he feels that it is under his remit to silence any voices of dissent especialy those that are voluntary and without means.
