Achill Girl

I got an email from an anonymous American reader there last month. As always letters are always welcomed.

I’m an American with a strong affection for an Irish girl who frequently goes to Achill and has told me much about it. I have just recently started playing around with poetry, and wrote this for her and figured it would be fun to try to get it published in or abouts Achill….

Achill Girl

When ya come ta get me and take me up or down am gonna ask one favor
A last trip I wish ta make
A place called Achill Isle I do so want to go.
I know it from an angel’s eyes

Such calm as if some ancient home was locked inside her breast
I long ta feel what she does feel when Achill she does go,
That warmth I want inside my chest as well.

But most of all I yearn to know this girl and this place it is her soul
Solitary like an island and beautiful like a rose
And if I may there’s one last wish I plead for you to grant

One night
And windy make it
To hold her close and kiss her soft
I’d cry on her I know I would but this she would permit
And when the sun does rise on Achill Isle, yer visit I’ll expect

But Death, ya know, I changed my mind
I ain’t goin with ya now
Unless ya call it heaven and leave her with me here
On Achill Isle
With Achill Girl
An Achill Man I’ll be.
